Can my dog eat pumpkin?
Pumpkins contain many vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to your dog. Pumpkin gives a boost to your dogs nutrition and enhance their digestion system. However, if you are feeding fresh pumpkin, you will need to be careful about which part you’re feeding as the stem and leaves are covered in prickly hairs.
These can cause irritation to your dog’s mouth and throat and may be harmful if ingested. Avoid offering the skin of pumpkins – if chunks are bitten off, they may present a choking hazard and if swallowed, there is a risk of gut obstruction.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), "Pumpkin can ease digestion in several ways. The soluble fibre content in pumpkin adds bulk to your dog's stool by absorbing water." They continue, "Fibre also acts as a prebiotic. ... They stimulate the growth or activity of these beneficial bacteria in the intestines and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Fibre does this by lowering the pH level and providing the necessary nutrients these bacteria need."
Always ensure to seek advice from your vet before making any changes to your dogs diet.
